What year are you in the HCIM program?
I am a second-year HCIM student.
Where are you originally from?
I am from India.
What was your undergraduate degree in?
I have an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering.
Do you have any work experience? If so, what did you do and for how long?
Yes, I had an internship for two months in full stack development at Reliance Industries. I have also been employed as a Graduate Research Assistant at University of Maryland for the past one year. I have been researching the topics of Virtual Reality at the GVIL lab.
Why did you choose UMD's HCIM program?
I was interested in Information studies (i.e. finding a way to learn ever increasing amounts of information available to us) and the field of Human-Computer Interaction (to create User Interfaces to do so). UMD's iSchool provided me a chance to do both of them at the same time.
What classes are you taking this semester?
I am was taking Capstone and Interactive Design (we are on break now).
What is your favorite class so far in the program?
My favorite class has been Computational Linguistics as I got to learn about different ways to understand language and develop models to detect hidden information in large amounts of text.
What is one thing you wish you knew before coming to UMD?
I wish I had started exploring other resources on campus and around the DC area earlier than I started. The coursework at UMD is not the only place to learn new things. Other places to learn stuff are hackathons, tech meet ups in the DC area and joining Campus group that organize social activities.
After school, what is your dream job?
I want to be a Virtual Reality UX designer.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I do ballroom dancing :)

The last TV show I watched was Sherlock Holmes
What was the last book you read?
Foundation by Isaac Asimov
