MEET MONDAYS: Carlea Holl-Jensen

Meet Mondays is a chance for everyone to learn a little about iSchool faculty. Join us every Monday to meet a new faculty member.

An Annapolis, MD native, Carlea Holl-Jensen has been the HCIM coordinator for over a year, but has been at UMD since 2011.

What brought you to UMD?

I came to UMD for a Masters degree in creative writing. While I was a student, I worked with some HCIL faculty members on a grant project developing alternate reality games (ARGs) to teach STEM concepts to middle schoolers. After I graduated, as my work with the ARG project was winding down, the opportunity to coordinate the Human-Computer Interaction Lab opened up, and that quickly grew to include coordinating the Master of Science in Human-Computer Interaction program, too. I realize I have a bit of an unconventional path to HCI, but the students, faculty, and staff are wonderful, and I'm excited by the work everyone is doing in this community.

What's your affiliation with the HCIM program?

I am a new faculty member.

What project is taking up most of your time at the moment? Can you tell us a little about it?

I am working on a lot of our fall career focus events. We're working on expanding the resources and support we offer students for career development, including portfolio workshops and resume review.

What do you find most challenging about working at the iSchool?

I don't have a background in HCI, so I'm always learning something new about the field.

What do you find most rewarding about working at the iSchool?

Definitely watching students succeed. Over the course of the program, they form great friendships and take on really awesome, ambitious projects. It's gratifying to see them gain confidence in their abilities, and I'm glad to know I can play some small part in helping them along in their progress.

What's your favorite place on campus? Why?

Does the coffee shop in the STAMP student union count? I have strong feelings about staying caffeinated.

What is currently in your refrigerator?

A bottle of Martinelli's sparkling cider.
