MEET MONDAYS: Gregg Vanderheiden

October 31, 2016

Meet Mondays is a chance for everyone to learn a little about iSchool faculty. Join us every Monday to meet a new faculty member.

Dr. Gregg Vanderheiden is a Wisconsin native. He worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he founded the Trace Center, for 45 years before joining UMD's iSchool one month ago.

What brought you to UMD?

The HCIM program and the people here.

What's your affiliation with the HCIM program?

I am a new faculty member.

What project is taking up most of your time at the moment? Can you tell us a little about it?

The Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII) (GPII.NET). Making it easier (or possible) for people who face barriers to the use of ICT due to disability, literacy, digital literacy and aging to use all the digital interfaces they encounter by having them automatically and instantly change into a form they can understand and use. At least that is the goal—and the grand challenge.

What do you find most challenging about working at the iSchool?

Time. Too many colleagues with interesting work related to mine.

What do you find most rewarding about working at the iSchool?

The people. The rich HCI environment.

What is currently in your refrigerator?

Which one? Office - Coke Zero. Home: Coke Zero, yogurt and the makings for banana splits.
