FRIDAY FORUM: Jenny Hottle

Friday Forum is here! It's a chance for everyone to get to know our HCIM cohort. Catch up every week to learn about the diverse backgrounds that makeup UMD's HCIM.

What year are you in the HCIM program?

I am a second year.

Where are you originally from?

I am from Naperville, IL.

What was your undergraduate degree in?

Multiplatform journalism (University of Maryland, May 2015)

Do you have an work experience ? If so, what did you do and for how long?

I work in the Office of Communications at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. I've been there for a little over a year.

Why did you choose UMD's HCIM program?

I was in an undergraduate honors program at UMD called Digital Cultures and Creativity, where I got my first taste of HCI. I was still set on being a reporter until my junior year of college, when I attended a hackathon. By the end of the 36-hour event, I knew I wanted to get into the tech industry, and I circled back to HCI. Because I had already worked with some professors affiliated with the HCIL, I felt like the HCIM program would be a perfect fit.

What classes are you taking this semester?

I am taking INST 728D - Interactive Design Methods and INST 775 - HCIM Capstone Preparation.

What is your favorite class so far in the program?

I liked Inclusive Technology Design (INST 728Z) a lot. The class focused on accessibility, and we learned about all different types of needs people might have and how to design products to meet those needs. I loved the weekly sketchbook assignments, where we had to sketch a solution to a design problem based on a certain audience.

What is one thing you wish you knew before coming to UMD?

Bring rain boots. It rains more than you'd expect. I didn't have a pair my first week of school freshman year, and I was not a happy camper walking to class in the rain.

After school, what is your dream job?

I would love to be a user experience designer.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I'm pretty good at jumping rope. I was on a jump rope team a while back and performed at halftime shows and in parades. I even got to miss school so I could travel to other schools and perform. My specialty was Chinese wheels, but I also enjoyed doing Double Dutch and performing in larger group routines.

For those of you who are interested, see the video below to find out what a "Chinese Wheel" is:

What was the last TV show you watched?

It was either "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" or "The Office." I've seen the entire series of The Office too many times to count, but it never fails to make me laugh after a long day.

What is the last book you read?

Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future
