Meet Mondays is a chance for everyone to learn a little about iSchool faculty. Join us every Monday to meet a new faculty member.
Dr. Jen Golbeck, a Crystal Lake, IL native, is an associate Professor, College of Information Studies and an Affiliate Associate Professor, Computer Science.
What brought you to UMD?
I came for my Ph.D. in computer science and joined the iSchool after my postdoctorate.
What project is taking up most of your time at the moment? Can you tell us a little about it?
Research project: I'm putting the most time into my Trollbusters online harassment project, which lots of HCIM students are helping with!
Overall project: I speak at some corporate/industry conference at least once a week, so I am on a lot of planes. You might call this "being a public intellectual" but it feels more like "Interacting with TSA".
What do you find most challenging about working at the iSchool?
My colleagues are doing such great work, and there are so many projects I'd like to do with them and start with them. There's just not enough time.
What do you find most rewarding about working at the iSchool?
I love that we are truly interdisciplinary. If I want to stray off into some interesting topic for a project, it's supported and encouraged. That's true almost nowhere else.
What's your favorite place on campus? Why?
I love the farm. I could hang out and watch those sheep for hours.
What is currently in your refrigerator?
Too much cheese, and I'm kind of obsessed with broccoli now so there are [at least] four heads crammed in wherever they will fit and two cases of diet coke.
