Meet Mondays is a chance for everyone to learn a little about iSchool faculty. Join us every Monday to meet a new faculty member.
Dr. Tamara Clegg, a Raleigh North Carolina native, has a joint appointment at the iSchool and the School of Education. She has been an Assistant Professor for six years.
What brought you to UMD?
A post-doc opportunity with Allison Druin brought me here.
What project is taking up most of your time at the moment? Can you tell us a little about it?
Three projects are taking up a lot of my time: In Science Everywhere, we are designing a social media app and ubiquitous technology to help children in low-SES communities capture and share the science they are doing across the contexts of their lives. In BodyVis, we are designing wearable technologies for body learning and science inquiry. In NatureNet we are designing community technologies to help adults in diverse communities engage in community-driven environmental projects. That's three projects but it's so hard to choose just one, I love them all!
What do you find most challenging about working at the iSchool?
Navigating between all of the amazing opportunities to collaborate with students and faculty, develop awesome new programs, and engage in research that I am really passionate about. The most challenging thing is that there are only 24 hours in a day!
What do you find most rewarding about working at the iSchool?
Collaborating with our amazing students and faculty and getting to partner with community organizations to try make a difference in the surrounding community
What's your favorite place on campus? Why?
Starbucks at Stamp Student Union—I love the walk there. It's also right between Hornbake and Benjamin (where the College of Education is—I have a joint appointment there) and I love having tea there!
What is currently in your refrigerator?
Fruit, veggies, milk, orange juice, and leftovers I need to throw away! Will cook tomorrow so there should be some more freshly cooked meals in there by then :)
